Today we transformed some left over dried flowers and things I found in the loft into the first essential oil pot pourri basket for this year.
Our most used essential oil at the moment is peppermint. Its fresh scent helps to energise both the body and the mind as well as assisting with concentration. You can also add a couple of drops to bath water to provide a soothing sensation for the skin.
It has quite a list of health benefits too, from helping with headache and migraine, to gum health and promoting healthy digestion as well as been used as an aid for IBS.
We have been using this oil seemingly all the time lately: namely in our aromatherapy gels and melts as well as in our invigorating body scrubs and hand soaps.
Aromatherapy Wax Melts
A delivery of Soy Wax arrived at the Rustic Kitchen yesterday, along with some Jade natural food dye. I havent used this colour before so I am looking forward to seeing how good it looks.
We will be making some essential oil wax melts tonight for the craft fair and following the green theme will be making peppermint and eucalyptus scented ones. The house will smell nice for sure this evening!
I will post some pics later.
Room Fresheners…The Morning After!
I have to say whilst the gels were setting last night the house smelt amazing but a part of me expected the smell not to be noticable this morning.
I was however pleasantly surprised, the peppermint wasnt particularly apparent which is odd as that happened to be the strongest scent whilst they were cooling down. The lemon and geranium could both be smelt when you ventured near them.
I do find with essential oils that the scent does nto fill a room as such but is quite subtle. I prefer it that way as some of the fragrance oils that we have can be a little overpowering.
So, a big success all round really and I will work on some new ones tonight if I find time, lavender and mandarin perhaps!
Its all happening in the rustic kitchen this evening and I have created our first rustic room fresheners. I completely forgot that I was going to use fragrance oils so ended up using some of my favourite essential oils instead, peppermint, lemon and geranium.
Have to say, whilst I have left them gelling overnight the scent they produce is truly amazing. I have placed them in different rooms too so its quite an attack on the senses wandering around the house this evening!
How great are the reused yoghurt pots?
The daily forage
The weather was much better this morning on the dog walk, amazing how different 6 degrees feels. I managed to find a load of pine cones too that have been washed and are now drying out.
Seems like perfect opportunity to try my hand at making a bowl of woodland pot pourri again with pine cones and some spare dreid flowers we have. I had never made any before but at Christmas a friend asked if I could make some natural pot pourri to give as a Christmas gift and by all accounts they went down a treat.
Pics are on this blog somewhere of the last batch made at Christmas!
Just as I was saying how much I like to try new ideas at the craft fairs I found these, I cannot wait to try them!
ROOM FRESHENER!
- Into each jar, drop a few drops (I repeat…a few…it doesn’t take more than 2 or 3) of food coloring. Then, put in about 30 drops of essential oil, give or take. The more essential oil you put in, the stronger the smell.
- Now for the fun part. Gather up 4 envelopes of unflavored gelatin, a tablespoon of salt, and 2 cups of cold water.
{ Why salt? Salt (or vodka) apparently help to keep the gel from molding. Interesting fact, isn’t it! }- Get one cup of water boiling on the stove. When it begins to boil, whisk in the gelatin, stirring until it’s all dissolved.
- Then, pour in the other cup of cold water and the salt, stirring until the salt is dissolved.
- Quickly pour the hot gelatin mixture in each of your jars, and then use a disposable stick or spoon to stir it into the oil and food coloring.
- Let these gel overnight.
Voila!!!
Air Freshener!
A friend of mine asked if we could make him some pot pourri for gifts. We created a natural woodland pot pourri using dried flowers and herbs that we collected from our local area.
One is gently scented with sprigs of lavender and essential oil whilst the other has a lovely woodland smell of pine oil!
